African Americans were taking a stand and boycotting the laws of Jim Crow which gave them power to escape the oppression they were facing. Most of them left their homes in the south and headed north in search of employment and a new beginning. This migration expressed the extent of their voice and gained power . Alain Locke said â€Å"..the mind of the Negro seems suddenly to have slipped from under the tyranny of social intimidation and to be shaking off the psychology of imitation and implies inferiority. By shedding the old chrysalis of the Negro problem were are achieving something like a spiritual emancipation.† By shedding this â€Å"chrysalis†, Alain is showing how the attitude and mindset of the negro is no longer shaken by inferiority and is now receiving spiritual freedoms. Racism in America seems to be a universally known concept and Langston Hughes’ â€Å"Let America Be America Again† demonstrates his thoughts of the American dream. This poem also contrasts Hughes’ hopes for America with the reality of life for those outside of the socially and economically dominant racial, religious, and social groups. In the poem he says, â€Å"American was never America to me.† What he means is America was supposed to be where freedom reigns, where opportunities are available, and where equality was important. By saying â€Å"Let America be America again† Langston Hughes is trying to bring back the idea and desire to live in a place where everyones dreams could come true but unfortunately he is seeing that this entire concept is flipped upside down and inside out. This gimmick that was created fooled everyone especially African Americans looking for a new life with freedom. These two works of literature show both sides of America through the lens of racism. In â€Å"The New Negro†, Locke shows that America has dug itself a hole and rid itself of its name â€Å"land of the free.† The African American people that were being oppressed by the white people of this country fought back because they realized that they had a voice and stood up for themselves and rejected that oppression which in a way shows the kinds of things America promised but tried to take away from a certain group of people because they were of another race. Langston Hughes essentially mirrors Locke with his poem â€Å"Let America Be America Again.† In his poem he shares what he thought America is about and how it lacks the aspect of the American dream it is so well known for; things like a better life, when they suck you dry, things like equal opportunities, and then discriminate. What both authors show is that America contradicted itself with so many things that peo ple lost respect for the country and fought back. Fortunately, in todays society, there are not a lot of oppressed people that need to fight back. Today people are more sensitive and accepting when it comes to anyone and as a democracy, we have the power to voice our opinion. One of the greatest leaders our nation had and was influenced by was Martin Luther King Jr. He fought for change and love and equality. In 1963, he wrote a letter called â€Å"The Letter from Birmingham† and in it he says â€Å"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affect one directly affects all indirectly.† Martin Luther is trying to convey the unity between us and how one injustice affects all of us even if it is indirect. His letter was used to demonstrate how to fight back against racism in a nonviolent manner. Langston Hughes had a rather larger influence on Martin Luther King Jr. especially in his speeches. He would refer to Hughes’ poems in his speeches but would never utter the poets name to prevent havoc. Langston Hughes and Alain Locke both influenced power of the people and that changed history. Both of these texts revealed how conceptions of race and its relationship to American culture have changed over time.

One such defender, Nina de Villard, said of The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer, The work that is misunderstood today will one day be in a museum looked upon with respect as the first formulation of a new art. De Villard displayed more foresight than her fellow critics. A cast of The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer along with more than 300 oil paintings, watercolors, works on papers and prints are currently enjoying the limelight as the inaugural exhibition of the Metropolitan Musem of Arts new Tisch Galleries. The exhibit, the first of  Degas work in 50 years, will open Tuesday and run through Jan. 8. The range of subjects includes not only  Degas famous ballet dancers, but also paintings of horse races, laundries, brothels, cafes and his lesser-known nudes. Although  Degas  is often associated with the Impressionists, helped them organize their shows and participated in their exhibitions, his art clearly stands apart. His works are the product of carefully made sketches in which he altered reality as he saw fit to create the maximum visual as well as psychological interest. The Impressionists instead worked directly from life, with little preparatory work, to capture fleeting moments. As a result, the viewer of most Impressionist works remains a casual observer, while the viewer of  Degas is often drawn in by the psychological tensions, most evident in his early pieces, and the subtle formal aspects of his later works. Degas work grows out of the long tradition of art history. He is often quoted as telling the Irish writer George Moore that his art was the product of the study of the Old Masters. Degas  met the neo-Classicist artist J. A. D. Ingres in 1855, when a friend of his fathers, M. Edouard Valpincon, refused to lend Ingres Bather to a large show of Ingres works. Valpincon feared the possibility of a fire. When  Degas  heard this, he was furious. You cannot refuse Monsieur Ingres request! he exclaimed. Valpincon relented and took the pieces as well as  Degas  to Ingres. Ingres advised the young artist to draw lines . . . many lines, after nature and from memory.  Degas  took the advice to heart. Ingres is present in all of  Degas lines crisp, sensitive and with little shading as is apparent in his studies for his first masterpiece, The Bellelli Family. Degas  went to Italy the prerequisite trip for any artist of his day in 1856 and reached Florence in 1858. There, he began a painting of his aunt Lauras family, the Bellellis.  Degas composition is bold and differs from Ingres in the unconventional pose used and and the narrative elements in the works background. Three of the family members the wife, one of the two girls and the husband look away from the viewer. Only the standing girl stares out of the canvas in typical Ingres fashion. The figures wear dark clothing, signifying the familys mourning of  Degas grandfather, represented in the drawing hanging on the wall. The black outfit also hides Lauras pregnancy; but what is not hidden is the tension between her and her husband. Her sad face and Ingres-like features appealed to  Degas  and clearly his sympathy for the familys discord lies with his aunt. The husband is shown in an awkward and unflattering pose, isolated and separate from both his wife and children. Although  Degas  continued to paint such portraits throughout most of his life, he found them boring and beneath his ambitions. He turned to producing history paintings, of which his first entry into the Paris Salon, The Misfortunes of the City of Orleans, was one. But such works were not  Degas strength. The best that can be said of them is that he introduced to the genre contemporary figures to replace the tradition use of Greek ideals. In other works, the arms long tired of posing hang slightly longer than believable. In all these works, definite indications of features and details are suppressed. A general color usually an unnatural color envelopes the form and lines are strategically placed to indicate the forms contours. These nudes, some of  Degas greatest works, with all their sensuous color, nearly abstract simplicity and strange croppings break through to the emergence of modern art.

Platos Republic Essay Socrates describes a perfect city in Plato’s The Republic. Many questions are asked in the book, such as â€Å"What is an ideal city? † Or, â€Å"What is justice? † And, â€Å"Is justice in the city possible? † Socrates tries to find the real meaning of the word justice. He starts with justice within a single person, and then he tries to take that concept and apply it to the city. Then, to figure out the perfect city, he goes back to the single person to find justice there. He shows that the perfect city needs the people in it to be assigned to their place. People who play their role in the city must be people of justice for the city to have justice. For Socrates, his idea of a perfect city has all the needed requirements for the city to exist with harmony. In order to develop the idea for a perfect city, Socrates has to create two versions of his city. In his first version of a city, each person in the city fills a need for the city. They are like gears in a watch, and they must fit perfectly. But a city that runs well like a watch doesn’t make a just city. Socrates brother points out that people need luxuries and entertainment. So the second version of the city needs luxuries. Platos ideal city is really the search for the truth of justice, if Socrates were able to find the relationship between the soul and city in his ideal city then he would have the true meaning of justice. We saw from the reading how he broke down the citys parts and also the soul. According to Plato, Socrates broke down the perfect city into four parts; each part is tied to a specific virtue that he believes will help define justice. The first three virtues are wisdom, courage, and moderation. Wisdom is the whole knowledge, which describes the rulers of the city. The rulers should be the ones who incorporate philosophy and ruling together to rule the city wisely. Courage describes the guardians, whose job was to defend the city from invasion and take new lands for the city. The third virtue of the ideal city was moderation which is the concept of self-control and each person knowing his or her role, also the concept of one man, one job. In The Republic, Plato divides the city into three classes: gold, silver, and brass and iron souls. Each class is designated to have a specific virtue. He believes that wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice combine together to form The Republic. Plato’s four virtues individually do not produce a perfect society. A combination of the four in each citizen is needed to have the ideal society. In Plato’s idea for the perfect â€Å"republic†, he decides that the basis of the city will be on four virtues. The first of them is wisdom. Plato defines wisdom as knowledge of the city as a whole. Of the three classes, the gold souls possess the virtue of wisdom. The gold souls are the only class whose knowledge goes beyond the mere facts to the level of true wisdom. In the Republic, the gold souls would be the philosopher kings, because they have been taught to see the truth of all things. The idea that philosophers should be kings would infuriate the leaders. Socrates threatened their positions and their qualification for being leaders. This is likely why they made false charges against him and killed him, as shown in his Socrates’ Apology.? The second virtue that Plato defines is courage. Courage is the preservation of the opinion produced by law, through education about what things are bad and what things are good. Courage can be found in the silver souls. Plato uses the example that when dyers want to dye wool, they start with the background. They need the right kind of white material, and they have to prepare it carefully; and if they go to this trouble, you cannot bleach the color out. If they do a poor job of it, the cloth quickly becomes washed-out and faded. Plato uses the dying analogy to city how he wishes to train the silver souls. He states that the people will undergo a precise training. Only uplifting music and physical activity will only be allowed. Plato wants a good upbringing to make the right ideas permanent in them, so that the bleach of pleasure, grief, fear, or death, would not wash the true colors from their souls. Once they get to this point of having a clear, firm grasp of what is really dangerous to a man, they knew their only task was to show courage. The silver souls can be compared with the guardians of the city who were not selected to be the leaders. They are also referred to as the auxiliaries. The third virtue in The Republic, is moderation. Plato defines moderation as the kind of harmony between the brass and silver souls. Moderation is the ability to control desires and to be the master of one’s own self. There are two things at work in a man’s heart. One is good, and one is bad. The bad can overwhelm the good. If the people have bad training or keep company with the wrong people, the bad force grows powerful and can overwhelm the good. If the good one controls them, then there is moderation; but if the bad one controls, they are a slave to their own desires. When a city as a whole is moderate, it is in harmony. Moderation is different from wisdom or courage. It is found not just in the gold and silver souls, but as something that runs throughout the city. The kings and the guardians must possess these to be people of justice and to help the city be a city of justice. The brass and iron class were the workers, and they are not held to the same high standard of sacrifice and knowledge that the silver and gold classes are, but as individuals they are required to have the same balance of the three virtues. However, they are stuck in the cave, looking at the forms on the walls. Their role in the city is to not be as enlightened as their leaders.? The fourth virtue comes when the city has a perfect balance of the other three. That is justice. The ideal city described in the Republic is ideal because it relates all essential parts to bring harmony among the different kind of people and the virtues that go hand in hand with to bring about justice. Socrates did have a belief that the person’s sex should not matter when it comes to their role in the perfect city. People were assigned to their roles based on if they fit the role – that is all. Socrates believed that if a woman can do everything a man can do then so be it. She could become a guardian. So, if a woman is fit for a guardian position, she should be a guardian. This belief was ahead of its time by more than 2000 years. Therefore, the question should be asked, â€Å"Is such a city possible, or is it just an ideal that is good to dream about? † My answer would be that it is impossible because it seems that everyone has a specific role to follow depending upon their abilities, both physically and mentally. What Socrates assumed is that with all the justice, people will be content with where they are. People who do not have much always look at the rich and want that kind of life. People on the bottom are always going to want more, which is human nature. This part of human nature will probably never be kept down, no matter how much justice there is in a city. The people of the city will be happy for some time, but the people at the bottom will ask questions about why they’re stuck in the job they have. When one group decides they want more the happiness will be destroyed, because each group will want more and more. The lower groups always want to reach for the top. When we see kids today, they are always striving to become the best and do something out of the ordinary, something that may be out of their class but if determined they can accomplish any feat. I know from my own experience, growing up in India, that big problems occur in a society when we classify everything, because the lower classes want to be higher. This is just basic human nature. Putting Plato and Socrates city to real life, take any country or city. For instance, India is a country that still has a lot of problems with castes. The highest caste was the educated Brahmins and the lowest caste is still called â€Å"Untouchables. † The Brahmins were only to be knowledgeable, or educated, and there were also people who entered the armies or were placed into them. The armies were the guardians of India, protecting the kingdoms and constantly looking for new land to acquire. The lower castes worked as tradesman and farmers. They took care of the basic needs of everyone in the country by producing products for the entire country. When you look at India today, it is changing. In the cities, you see people succeeding no matter what their caste is. Untouchables are getting educated more and they are not held back from getting a job just because they are untouchable, and India is improving without the required placement of people in lifelong roles. What happened? People do not want to be placed in certain roles, even if the role suits them. It is fine if you are the upper class, but the people at the bottom want to achieve success and rise to the top, which breaks down Socrates’s perfect city. No one wants to be content with being at the bottom; everyone wants to be able to try to be at the top. Platos ideal city would only work if people were content with their God-given positions. If there is harmony between the groups, then there is happiness, as we see in the soul and city throughout The Republic. However, in real life people find harmony with themselves when they achieve their goals and live a good life. Young Goodman Brown: Immature Innocence vs. Mature Guilt   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story â€Å"Young Goodman Brown,† Hawthorne expresses his true feelings about the negative beliefs of the puritan religion through usage of expressive styles and themes, various characters, and objects within the story. Because the puritan religion was in affect during a very complicated and chaotic time known as the Salem Witch Trials many people, including Young Goodman Brown, would be shocked to discover that the pure puritan society they knew was in fact contaminated with evil.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Hawthorne uses the main character, Young Goodman Brown, to lucidly convey the story’s main theme of corrupted innocence. When one carefully analyzes Young Goodman Brown’s character the main concept that comes to mind is that the character appears to be an implied part of his religion-pure. The reader should keep in mind that purity is often associated with innocence. The sense of purity within the character of Young Goodman Brown will later appear to be awkward. In the beginning of the story when he meets the Devil in the forest the narrator states that the Devil â€Å"was about fifty years old, apparently in the same rank of life as Goodman Brown, and bearing a considerable resemblance to him, (Hawthorne, 337).† Through this statement the reader now knows that Young Goodman Brown is not young as his name implies, he is actually a very old man who is just now reaching the stage in life where one realizes that the world is not surfeited with just purity alone, it also contains evil. When the reader first begins the story it is automatically assumed that his title Young Goodman Brown means that he is literally young, which further implies innocence, immaturity, and naive ness. During the Puritan times the title Goodman was equivalent to the present day title of mister. Hawthorne presents a character that has the assumed name of a child, Young Goodman Brown, and the demeanor and thought process of a child; however, the reader is to discover later that he is an adult with the mindset of a child. When the reader discovers that the character is not a child, the fact that Brown was taking a journey into what he believed was initiation to manhood during the beginning of the story now makes the situation very awkward. Young Goodman Brown maintains the mindset of a child; he is naà ¯ve to the fact that the world and people are not pure in and innocent even though they take part in the pure puritan religion.

In this paper I will discuss gender role and its impact on inequality. I will discuss gender inequality and its impact on creating as well demolishing families. I will mention different family structures and how gender roles have changed throughout time. I will explain how feminism has given opportunities to women and in effect transformed the family structure. First let me define gender. Gender is composed of three parts: biology, gender roles, and sexuality. Gender roles are the behaviors, attitudes, appearance, and etcetera that a specific culture has deemed appropriate for a specific sex. May I note that gender roles can and do vary between cultures. Some cultures even include a third gender category because not everyone fits within†¦show more content†¦In our society we have come to believe that because a man is physically stronger (generally speaking) he is the one in charge of protecting the woman. Even though there are many women who are perfectly capable of protect ing themselves. So when two women are together in a relationship gender roles are blurred. There are those who don’t understand who will fill the role of protector. This is why I believe that gender role does more harm than good. In our culture, boys and girls are taught every day- either consciously or subconsciously- how they are supposed to act. For example, when we see commercials with military toys for boys and pretty little princesses for girls. In movies and television, men are the heroes in which they save the women. We all have heard the expression, â€Å"boys will be boys†, when they are rough-housing or playing rambunctiously. However, girls should not partake in these activities for they may get hurt and that’s not how a lady acts anyway. Therefore boys receive the message that boys are to be in charge and dominant and the girls should be submissive (socialization approach). â€Å"Society’s expectations about how to behave are transmitted to children through channels such as parents, books, television, and peer groups. In these ways, cultural differences between men and women are reproduced in the next generation. (Public and Private Families)† In our culture
